foxy wine review

A print magazine devoted to the wines of Appalachia and the South.

Call for submissions!

Do you have a story about winemaking in Appalachia or the South?

For the first issue, Foxy Wine Review is seeking stories from both emerging and seasoned writers. The first issue will double as a creative writing workshop—if your pitch is accepted, you’ll develop your stories alongside other writers over the course of two Zoom sessions.

Writers with ties to Appalachia or the American South will be given preference. Whether you’re from here, currently living here, or have spent a significant amount of time here, we want the stories we publish to be rooted in place in every way.

Deadline to submit is July 5th, 2025.

Deadline to submit:

July 5th

  • Personal essays, nonfiction, journalistic pieces, regional overviews, wine reviews, interviews, or fusions of these styles.

  • Profiles of grapes that grow well in the region - help us build an understanding of what grows here and who is doing it.

  • The history, present, and imagined futures of local wine regions.

  • Explorations of topography, geography, and terroir.

  • Stories about small farms, organic and biodynamic winemakers, and anyone prioritizing environment over industry.

  • Winemakers pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in their climate, in their market, or challenging the definition of wine.

  • The challenges and triumphs of growers acquiring and preserving land.

  • Labor issues and how US policy impacts marginalized workers.

  • Stories about native grapevines, hybrids, and heirloom varietals that call Appalachia or the South home.

  • Creative wine reviews.

  • Coverage of wine events or projects in solidarity with social justice movements, climate action, and mutual aid.

  • Raising The Bar - stories of wine bars and tasting rooms serving as “third spaces”, buoying resistance movements, and supporting community.

  • Dinner Diary - Southern food and Southern wine / Appalachian food and mountain wine - tell us what you had, who was there, where you were, how it tasted, and what y’all talked about.

  • Co-zy - winemakers cofermenting regional fruits and other ingredients with winegrapes, or using locally sourced materials in their winemaking process.

  • Got something else? Let us know.

Artists and Photographers

Submission Guidelines: Read Carefully

Send your pitch to foxywinereview@gmail.com with the subject “Writer Pitch” or “Artist Pitch” by July 5th, 2025. Briefly tell us what the story is about and why you’re the right person to tell it. Let us know if you’ve been published before (include links where applicable) or if you’re a new writer, attach a writing sample or a first draft. Last, tell us (in a sentence or two) what your connection is to the region you’re writing about.

We’re working to secure funding; in the meantime, this is a labor of love. Writers who would like to participate in the first issue/s will have the opportunity to develop their stories together in an online writers’ workshop facilitated by the editor and will be contacted first for stories in the future. The first workshop will meet twice between August 15th and September 15th.
